American School Awards

I&S Honored by American School & University Interior Showcase

Three projects designed by I&S Group, Inc. (I&S) were honored by the American School & University Magazine Interiors Showcase. American School & University has been highlighting achievements in planning, design, operations, maintenance and management of educational facilities since 1928.

South Central Services Cooperative (SCSC), located in North Mankato, was awarded two of the national education awards. I&S used sustainable materials and construction methods for the project worthy of LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification.

Mark Cipos AIA, CID sculpted the building to have gentle curves and natural light to guide the interior spaces. “We wanted the building to be completely functional yet intuitive to those using the space,” Cipos recalls. The Architect created the initial floor plan on site while conversing with the owner, scratching the two functions of the facility (administrative offices & conference center) softly in the soil; each slightly pulled apart with a central serpentine corridor connecting the two.

SCSC serves over 100 local member institutions by cooperatively hosting administrative and educational services for the region.

The Memorial Library on the campus of Minnesota State University, Mankato was honored for their recent third-level renovation. Space planning was extremely vital for this project. The 14,000 square foot existing space was efficiently re-designed for current and future faculty needs. The space was designed to promote work flow efficiency for the entire library.

A lower level renovation of the South Central College, Faribault Campus (SCC) was also honored by American School & University. I&S worked with SCC staff to integrate space and technology needs for the growing and innovative higher-educational facility. “The space was dictated by columns and low ceilings,” mentions John Krenz, project manager and graduate from the same college. “Though we were able to program the space efficiently and use those obstacles as design features.”

The President of I&S, Chad Surprenant, stated “It’s extremely satisfying to know our young professionals are contributing to the institutions they chose to be educated in.”
