Volk Transfer provides shipping, warehousing, and logistics for a wide variety of customers, both regionally and long-haul. As they have continued to grow, it became apparent they needed a larger, modern facility.
The selected site is located adjacent to US14 in Mankato, an interregional corridor. The site is also very visible from the heavily traveled highway, which I&S took advantage of when designing and siting the prominent building.
A major site challenge was the existence of shallow bedrock. To minimize excavation costs, I&S raised the building, which also reduced the need for costly utility excavation.
The building was constructed of economical and durable precast concrete, which allowed for a shortened construction schedule. The facility also serves as the company's headquarters, and therefore required not only the docking and warehousing space, but also a modern office space that reflects the quality service the company provides. This was accomplished through a two story design with a prominent vaulted entryway.
