The City of Mankato has made a long term commitment to increase the number of parking facilities in the downtown core of the City to reduce the shortfall in parking stalls, increase the use of downtown businesses by citizens and visitors, and, ultimately, encourage the continuing rebirth of the City Center.

The plans to redevelop the existing HECO building at the corner of Second and Hickory Streets resulted in the City contracting with I&S Group to design a parking structure near the intersection of 2nd and Hickory Streets downtown Mankato. The parking ramp provides improved parking facilities for both the renovated HECO building and additional parking for the City Center.

The project was delivered as a design-build project in close cooperation with the Construction Manager At Risk, Knutson Construction. Cast-in-place post-tensioned concrete was selected as the structural system for the ramp due to its design flexibility, durability, and proven performance in parking facilities. The ramp provides 210 parking stalls that will provide easy access to the Intergovernmental Center, HECO Office Building, and the historic Brett's Building.

The ramp is sited at a transitional area from historical structures to more modern buildings, and therefore the design of the ramp provides a transition between these various building types.
