Cherokee's swimming facility was nearly half a century old, and the entire facility needed to be upgraded if was to remain in service. The community had considered tearing down the bathhouse and upgrading the pool and filter system. Newer concepts, such as zero depth, slides, and play structures were of interest to the committee established to assess the situation. Finally, the park that the pool was located in was not very user friendly.
I&S evaluated the situation and presented alternatives to the community. The final recommendations included completely removing the old pool, filter system, and bathhouse, and constructing a new facility. The new facility, because it was so much larger than the previous complex, required extensive reshaping of the park in which the existing facility was located.
Recommendations were made and approved to reconstruct the park also, which include walking trails, observation areas and a shelter and stage for summer picnics and concerts.
The new complex has been extremely successful, and is drawing many more swimming and other recreational users. More revenue is being produced, and community pride has increased dramatically.
