Mankato Family YMCA

Mankato Family YMCA

Mankato, MN

Guided by their core values of faith, caring, respect, responsibility, and honesty, the Mankato Family YMCA has grown and prospered since being founded in 1874. To continue accommodating member growth following a previous expansion, YMCA reqwuested ISG to renovate their existing facility.

Early renovations focused on the new, 30,000 square feet addition that included a life/fitness center, childcare/youth classrooms and play areas, a youth/teen center, and a new two-story aquatic center. The Taylor Family Aquatic Center was built with an architectural pre-cast wall and ceiling system, amd the other additions were made of brick masonry with honed and rock-face local limestone accents. Creating a more secure lobby and member check-in desk, the entrance to this area was relocated closer to the parking lot. Due to its close proximity to the parking lot, the relocation also allowed for a new drop off and pick up area, increasing convenience for members.

Additional renovations began in 2012 and addressed the aging locker rooms, which had not been updated for decades. The family locker room was completely reconfigured and more than doubled in size. Accompanying this expansion, the locker rooms were moved closer to the entrance and the Taylor Family Aquatic Center to increase privacy. The YMCA’s general contractor established a guaranteed budget of $2,227,623 for the renovations. Through ISG’s design assistance, the amount was reduced by $434,324 through strategic value engineering, while maintaining the basic design principals of the space. Furthermore, no additional change orders were requested by the YMCA following the value engineering services and design. Less costly materials, alternative electrical system types, and other opportunities for cost savings all attributed to this major reduction in estimated cost.

The Mankato Family YMCA experienced a 33% membership increase after expansions and renovations. As a result, they were showcased as the number one fitness center in Mankato Magazine’s “Best of Mankato” July 2015 edition. The alterations allowed Mankato Family YMCA to effectively achieve their mission of developing a holistic well-being for the entire community.
