Alexander Ramsey Park Master Plan

Alexander Ramsey Park Master Plan

Redwood Falls, MN

Located in Redwood Falls, Minnesota, Alexander Ramsey Park encompasses 256 acres and is a focal point for the local community. The Park provides a picturesque setting for camping, hiking, public events, and festivals. Upon being awarded the Regional Park destination by the State, the City of Redwood Falls asked ISG to prepare a guiding plan that outlines and prioritizes future changes.

Incorporating existing survey data, maps, resources, and City information, ISG developed a report that organizes potential trends, current goals, and a future vision of Alexander Ramsey Park. First, ISG examined the Park’s history, ecology, previous improvements, and amenities to acquire a detailed understanding of Alexander Ramsey Park’s current strengths and needs. The Park’s status as a regional park placed significant emphasis on the need to preserve and protect the natural landscape, which influenced what changes would enhance visitors’ experience. The popularity of recreational activities and feedback from previous open houses further shaped which improvements were most important, and were prioritized on a short, mid, and long term scale. Short-term goals, such as renovating the restroom, refurbishing walking trails, and evaluating the swing bridge, were determined to increase visitor safety, as well as have a high interest within the community. Long-term goals, slated for completion within the next five to 10 years, were less integral to the park experience, and included improving trail connections to two other parks and adding a splash pad. The plan also identifies a process to foster community input and engagement through the ongoing process to ensure future plans reflect shared communal values.

The Redwood Falls Community benefits from this plan in more ways than one. It is used as a supporting document for grant applications, including the Minnesota Park & Trail Legacy program, spurring necessary changes that allow Alexander Ramsey Park to better serve visitors.
