Aplington Parkersburg High School

Parkersburg, IA

An EF5 Tornado ripped through the southern 2/3rds of Parkersburg on Sunday, May 25th, 2008, in the late afternoon. Lives were lost and many were injured, and the devastation the tornado left in its wake was indescribable. Included in the destruction was the main high school. We assisted the high school in working with the insurance company on assessing the damage, working with structural engineers in order to determine that the building was damaged beyond repair, and eventually agreeing on a replacement cost to rebuild.

We recommended a quick turnaround would be possible by selecting a construction manager. We assisted the school through this process and they eventually selected Larson Construction to proceed as quickly as possible with the necessary rebuilding efforts.

Schematic design, design development and final working drawings on the new high school were completed in a matter of months, with construction starting in September of 2008, and completed for occupancy by August of 2009. The second phase that housed the school’s secondary functions, including the gym and auditorium, was completed in November of 2009.
