Eagle Grove Wastewater Treatment Plant

Eagle Grove Wastewater Treatment Plant

Eagle Grove, IA

A rotating biological contactor (RBC) is a biological treatment process used in the treatment of wastewater following primary treatment. The RBC process involves allowing the wastewater to come in contact with a biological medium in order to remove pollutants in the wastewater before discharge.

The Eagle Grove treatment plant had two trains of three RBC’s each, which did a fair job of treatment, including the removal of ammonia, but the capacity was being challenged by the discharge from a soybean processing plant. The sludge processing system was antiquated and needed upgrading, plus additional final clarifier capacity was needed. Furthermore, a four million gallon equalization lagoon was discharging directly into the receiving stream when full, and the plant flows were too high to treat the overflow water.

To increase capacity, the project required a third train of three RBC’s to be added to the building’s exterior. Covers were installed over the RBC’s for winter operation. A splitter box was constructed to evenly distribute the flows to the RBC trains. The existing anaerobic sludge digesters were renovated with new, more efficient gas handling equipment. A new aerated sludge storage tank was added to store sludge when the drying beds could not handle the additional sludge.

As a result of the project, ammonia nitrogen removal was enhanced and the plant consistently meets Iowa Department of Natural Resources standards for ammonia as well as the other tested parameters. The facility is also now able to handle the sludge through the existing sludge drying beds throughout the year.
