Stearns County Ditch No. 7

Stearns County Ditch No. 7

Stearns County, MN

Comprised of primarily agricultural farmland and gently rolling topography, CD 7 encompasses 69,300 linear feet of open ditch. Despite previous improvements and repairs, there were still a fair amount of tile washouts, sediment accumulation and vegetation, such as cattails, trees, and shrubs impeding water flow and causing erosion. Recommendations concentrated on eliminating these flow restrictions through open ditch cleaning, erosion control, and 3,100 linear feet of brush and shrub clearing. To minimize runoff and erosion, buffer strips and seeding, and water and sediment control basins (WASCOBs) were added. Repairs of sloughs, 72 tile outlets, and several culvert crossings increased system capacity and facilitated water flow. Other best management practices (BMPs) included alternative side inlets and hickenbottom inlets, which will increase water detention time, reduce peak flow rates, and allow for sedimentation. A level one wetland delineation was completed for the entire watershed, and a Multi-Purpose Drainage Management (MDM) plan was also prepared
